Indonesia adalah 'Supermarket for Natural Disaster' (Sambutan Kepala Bakosurtanal untuk The 2nd Indonesian Geospatial Technology Exhibition)

Poor you, Indonesia, the experts are making serious joke on you !

Inilah selengkapnya sambutan Beliau Kepala Bakosurtanal:

“A supermarket for natural disasters”. Although it was not seriously meant, this new nickname for Indonesia was introduced after several natural disasters happened in the last two years. Indeed. Earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions, floods and other disasters have been taking turn to strike different areas in Indonesia.

This makes us realize that we must raise our attention and effort in building a disaster information system. An information system that can be used as a guiding tool for both pre-disaster (such as disaster risk studies, designing evacuation routes, determining the best sites for refuges, etc.) and post-disaster activities (damage and need assessment, help distribution, rehabilitation, etc.). This kind of information system needs reliable data about what and where something is on the Earth’s surface: geospatial data.

Geospatial data and technology are also required for constructing a sound spatial planning, to ensure that the development activities of a certain area will take into account all necessary aspects, especially the environmental aspect. This in turn will minimize the negative effects that may arise because of the development process.

The rapid development of the information and communication technology (ICT), has also been affecting the geospatial world. Nowadays, geospatial technology that used to be only known in the mapping world, is slowly becoming an indispensable factor in many industry sectors such as transportation, banking, real estate, agro-business and many others. The term Geo-information has born as the result of the integration between ICT and geospatial.

To embrace this development, BAKOSURTANAL has decided to take a more active role in raising public awareness about the importance of geospatial technology. It is in line with one of its missions to educate the society about the role of spatial information in our life.

After having a great success with the First Indonesian Geospatial Technology Exhibition in August 2006, BAKOSURTANAL invites you to join the Second Indonesian Geospatial Technology Exhibition 2007. This exhibition will be held on August 29 –September 1, 2007 in the Assembly Hall, Jakarta Convention Center. We believe this will be a unique meeting forum among data and technology providers, developers, and one of their largest markets in the world.
Together, we will show the power of the integration of geospatial data and technology with the information and communication technology to equip and prepare us for a better future as the theme of the exhibition accordingly says “Geo-information for a Better Future”.
